The Road Not Taken ( Class : ix )

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally layIn leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference

The Road not Taken
Questions-Answers

1. Where does the traveller find himself? What problem does he face?
Ans:The traveller finds himself at a point where two roads diverge. His problem is to decide on which road he should travel.

2. Discuss what these phrases mean to you.
(i)A yellow wood.
Ans: A forest in the autumn season. Autumn corresponds to the old age.
(ii) It was grassy and wanted wear

3. Is there any difference between two roads as the poet describe them?
(i) In stanza two and three
Ans: The two paths were similar. In the beginning the poet felt that one of them was grassy and had not been walked over by many people. But when he walked on it for some distance, he realized that it was like the other road.

(ii) In the last two lines of the poem?
Ans: Here again the poet talks of his initial decision when he thought that the roads were different and chose the one that had been walked over by a lesser number of people.

4. What do you think the last two lines of the poem mean?
Ans: In the last two lines of the poem the poet expresses his opinion that making a choice out of the option will be responsible for our future. Life does not give multiple chances. The decision taken by a person in his present can makes all the differences.
